My Own ESXi Server Part 6 Updating ESXi Server using vSphere Host Update Utility

In Part 4 Installing ESXi Server on a USB Stick, I installed the initial release of ESXi4.  Since that initial release, there has been a number of patches.  To install these patches, I will use vSphere Host Update Utility.  You might remember that I checked an additional box during the vSphere Client install to have this be available to us now.

How to Patch VMware ESXi 4 using vSphere Host Update Utility

1)  Go to Start > All Programs > VMware > vSphere Host Update Utility 4.0

2)  Check Don't ask again and click Yes.

3)  Select your host and click Scan for Patches.

4)  Enter user name of root and password that you used when you installed and customized ESXi Server.  Click Login.

5)  In this case, it reported that there are 11 patches detected.  Click Patch Host.

6)  A detailed list of the patches is then displayed.  Click Install.

7)  You will see a report that once the patches is completed.  In this case the status is Success.  Click OK.      With this set of patches, a reboot is required.

8)  I recommend repeating the process to ensure there are no other patches.  Click Scan for Patches.
