How to Install FreeBSD in VMware Fusion 3
1) Download the 8.0-RELEASE-i386-dvd1.iso file.
2) From the VMware Fusion toolbar, select File > New
3) Click Continue without disc
4) Select Use operating system installation disc image file and then navigate to the FreeBSD iso file, then click Continue
5) Choose Other as the Operating System and FreeBSD as the version, and then click Continue.
6) Click Finish and then Save.
7) Press Enter or just watch and let the time expire and default option will be chosen which is what we want.
8) Leave country as United States and press Enter.
Note: Unfortunately I cannot show any other screenshots of the install. Whenever I press Control-Command to escape from the VM and trigger a screenshot, the VM takes the keys and starts moving the cursor and flipping screens.
9) Select Standard installation.
10) Press OK.
11) Press A for FDISK to use the Entire Disk. You will see 3 partitions with largest one reserved for freebsd.
12) Press Q to Quit.
13) Select Standard for a standard MBR with no boot manager.
14) Press OK.
15) Press A for Auto Defaults. You will see 5 mounts (/, swap, /var, /tmp, /usr).
16) Press Q to Finish.
17) As I started with the dvd iso, I can select CD/DVD to install from a FreeBSD CD/DVD.
18) Press Yes to confirm installation.
19) You will see a Congratulations message. Press OK.
20) Press Yes to configure Ethernet.
21) Select em0 to configure Intel(R) PRO/1000 Ethernet card.
22) Select No for IPv6 configuration.
23) Select Yes for DHCP configuration.
24) Fill in host name and press OK. I use freebsd8 for host name.
25) Select No for using this machine to function as a network gateway.
26) Select No for configuring inetd.
27) Select Yes to enable SSH login.
28) Select No to Anonymous FTP.
29) Select No to NFS server.
30) Select No to NFS client.
31) Select No to customize system console settings.
32) Select Yes to set this machine's time zone now.
33) Select No for UTC.
34) Select America.
35) Select Canada or whatever your country is.
36) Select from Canada Time Zones.
37) Select No to PS/2, serial or bus mouse.
38) Select No to browsing the FreeBSD package collection now.
39) Select Yes to adding initial user accounts.
40) Select User and add user login id and password.
41) Select Exit.
42) Press OK to set the root password. Enter password when prompted.
43) Select No for last chance to set any last options.
44) Select X Exit Install.
45) Select Yes to confirm exit and reboot.
46) Press OK to remove media from drive. I exit out of VM and go into Settings to disconnect the cd/dvd drive.
47) The VM continues to reboot. When completed, you will now have login prompt.
